Riverfront Park || North Charleston, SC

We are starting to actually realize how much amazing history there is here in Charleston. Landon had the day off today, so we took a little afternoon stroll through the old Navy Yard. There used to be a full-on Navy Port here in Charleston right off of the Cooper River, until there were some big budget cuts in 1996 and basically the whole place shut down. But I still can't believe those big boats could just come cruising up the river. That's so crazy to me! We passed several old, abandoned military family homes on our way to the Riverfront Park, which were a little creepy but still so beautiful. They had that sweet, southern charm and were surrounded in big oak trees that stretch over the roads like a giant canopy.

The Riverfront Park is a memorial site with plaques and things that explain the Navy Yard's history and purpose throughout the various periods of war. It was quiet and practically deserted. We sat next to the river on the swing and thought some really deep thoughts -- like what should we have for dinner -- haha! I really enjoy learning history, but I am sure not one to remember the fine details later on. When I see all those old photographs though, I always try to imagine what life was like back then. It is so wild to think about how much the world has changed in just the past 100 years. Maybe it's some weird photographer thing, but sometimes I wish I could go back in time and see those black and white photographs come to life in color. So nostalgic, I know..

BTW there is some kind of factory/plant right there off of the river that puts off this nasty odor of death. The air literally smells like poop some days. And on those days I am always sure to keep all of my windows and doors closed!

On our way back to the truck, we found -- THE COOLEST -- swing ever. It dangled from the highest tree limb in one of those huge oak trees. Seriously, the chain had to have been at least 20 feet long. I jumped on and made Landon push me and Libby and it was so fun! Although, Libby wasn't really a fan -- haha! When we started getting some serious air, she got all nervous and burrowed her nose into my shirt. We are definitely going to have one of those someday.
